Pupils shine in Olympics

JACKSON — Seventh-grade pupils from the St. Aloysius School earned honors at the 18th annual Monsignor Donovan Scholastic Olympics.

The event was held at Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River, on March 15. Middle school pupils from Ocean and Monmouth counties participated in the event.

Schools were divided into three categories based on enrollment. St. Aloysius School placed first in its division and third overall out of 16 participating schools.

Principal Elizabeth O’Connor said she was proud of how the pupils represented St. Aloysius School.

“Today’s achievements reflect the hard work and efforts of the team as a whole, from the students who studied for their subject to the teachers who gave of their time to prepare the students.”

St. Aloysius pupils received a gold medal in English (Jake Schnaak), silver medals in art (Jackie Hannah), spelling (Brendan Madden), technology (Emily McEwan), and science (Dan McGowan), and bronze medals for math (Kaitlyn Hassler) and spelling (Stella Mrowicki).

St. Aloysius is represented every year at the Monsignor Donovan scholastic competition, and the team, for a number of years, has been moderated by middle school math teacher Donna May.

“We are very proud of our students and their success,” May said.

Student Ashley Gundling said the Scholastic Olympics was a great experience and said everyone had a wonderful time.

Students Elizabeth Safarian and Zach Canderozzi said participating in the Scholastic Olympics was a fun experience and said they were nervous and excited to take part in the event.

Student Christopher Eiserle said he felt good because he was chosen to represent St. Aloysius.

Other seventh-grade pupils in the competition were Ryan Barto, Jordan Chan and Zach Maynor.
