HOWELL — The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office has charged a township man with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Scott Gregory, 24, of Howell.

Julius K. Garrett, 23, of Howell, remained lodged in the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, in lieu of $1 million bail, with no 10 percent option, Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr. said on June 28.

In addition to the murder charge, Garrett was also charged with possession of a weapon (a knife) for unlawful purposes. He faces up to 30 years in prison, Warshaw said.

Police responded to a 911 call at 4:05 a.m. June 20 that alerted them to a man lying on the ground near Fort Plains Road. Gregory was declared dead at 4:35 a.m., Warshaw said.

The two men apparently had fought at a party at an undisclosed location before the incident that led to the death of Gregory, Warshaw said.

He declined to comment on how the two men ended up at the location near Fort Plains Road or what led to the dispute. The case is still under investigation, Warshaw said.

Anyone with information regarding this situation should call Detective Louis Zuppa of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 800-533-7443 or Howell Detective Nancy Carol at 732-938-4547.

Howell Police Chief Ronald Carter referred questions about the case to the prosecutor’s office.

Gregory is survived by his parents, William and Susan Gregory, of Howell; and his sisters and brothers, Melissa Gregory and her husband, Michael D’Amico, of Lakehurst, Cindy Knapp and her husband, Larry, of Florida, Jonathan Gregory and his wife, Melissa, of Jackson, William Gregory Jr., of Matawan, and Shannon Gregory, of Howell.
