Outside funding boosts projects

PLUMSTED — A number of road improvements throughout Plumsted are either under way or close to starting, as more than $150,000 in state and county funding makes its way to the township.

AnAug. 25 announcement by municipal officials stated that the New Jersey Local Aid Infrastructure Funding Program has awarded a $57,000 grant for paving, drainage and road improvement projects on Helen Street and Locust Lane.

“Helen Street is located right next to our police station, and we would like to have that street completely paved,” Mayor Ronald Dancer said. “This project will also extend a portion of the road.”

In addition to those funds, $100,000 was awarded to Plumsted by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs through the Downtown Business Improvement Zone program (D-BIZ), according to the township.

Funding from D-BIZ, procured by New Egypt’s Main Street Organization, will go toward a “streetscaping” project along Main and North Main streets that is expected to include repaving, beautification, and pedestrian safety additions.

The installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Maple Avenue, Main Street and Jacobstown Road is under way. The mayor said the light will provide a break in traffic flow at the intersection.

“This is significantly important in these economic times because we have a lot of smaller mom-and-pop stores on this road and they are struggling,” Dancer said. “These improvements are going to make it more convenient, accessible and safer for people to patronize these local businesses.”

Work on North Main and Main streets is expected to be completed before Oct. 14, as Ocean County plans to repave sections of Route 528.
