JACKSON — The replacement of a failing culvert that is the probable cause of a large sinkhole on Buckingham Drive near the corner of Cambridge Drive may soon be under way.
The Jackson Township Council at its meeting of June 28 passed a resolution to authorize the emergency purchase of a custom made pre-cast concrete culvert that will replace the culvert that is failing.
Township Engineer Dan Burke said officials are moving to put a contract out for the new culvert. He said permits from the state Department of Environmental Protection have been received.
He said the culvert that is failing was installed in the early 1970s and has outlived its expected lifespan.
The council approved a resolution authorizing the purchase of the replacement culvert in an amount not to exceed $70,000.
Burke said it will take a few weeks for the new culvert to arrive. When it gets to Jackson it will be installed immediately, and that should resolve the situation that has been plaguing residents for quite some time, according to the engineer.
