Students sought for pilot journalism program

Freeholder Barbara J. McMorrow has announced an opportunity for high school students to sharpen their journalism skills and to provide a public service by reporting on issues that impact Monmouth County during the county’s Student Journalism Program.

Two representatives from each Monmouth County public high school, and any teachers who may be interested, are invited to participate in this pilot program. The participants should have a strong interest in journalism and government as well as a strong sense of commitment and motivation.

They will meet monthly and have the option to attend public meetings and events. Members of the professional media will speak with the students on a regular basis.

The students will write an article each month on a variety of topics related to county government. These articles may be submitted by the participants to local and student newspapers. Editing and assistance will be provided by the freeholders’ staff.

The first meeting will be held 3:30-4:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Hall of Records in the Freeholder Meeting Room, Freehold, on the second floor. All participants must provide their own transportation to and from the Hall of Records.
