Posts on the community bulletin board aren’t the only colorful things in front of the Roosevelt post office these days.
Girl Scout Troop 70649 planted pink and purple impatiens and petunias near the post office’s flagpole on May 22.
Rochelle Shipman, officer in charge of the Roosevelt post office, said, “I think this is a phenomenal thing that they are doing to make the area more beautiful. This area has never been planted before.”
She continued, “This is a very small office. I think it’s nice to have the kids involved with it.”
Troop leader Nanci Husko said, “We try to teach the girls ways that they can help the community and that there are other things out there than playing all of the time.”
Noting that her troop really seems to enjoy helping, Husko said the Brownies are required to do 15 hours of community service before they can advance to the junior level.
The troop, which comprises girls 7-8 years old from East Windsor and Roosevelt, had fun planting and finding grubs, earthworms and other bugs as they dug into the soil.
East Windsor’s Alyssa Grillo, 7, said, “I like planting because you get to see all different kinds of creatures.”
Roosevelt’s Carson Donnelly-Fine, 8, noted that the troop recently went to Homefront, a homeless shelter for women and children in Lawrenceville, where they also planted flowers.
East Windsor’s Carly Roberts, 8, said one of the most important things she has learned from being a Girl Scout “is that helping the community is very, very important.”
East Windsor’s Gabrielle Husko, 7, said she enjoys being a Girl Scout because she likes to help other people and the planet.
East Windsor’s Jessica Ketterer, 7, noted that troop leaders Husko and Lisa Grillo, of East Windsor, are great.
“They help me sometimes when I don’t know what to do. They also do really fun stuff with us and teach us a lot,” she said.
Besides community service projects, the Scouts also get together to do other things.
East Windsor’s Gillian Roberts, 7, said, “We do fun stuff like crafts.”
Shipman said she was honored and pleased with the scouts’ work at the post office.
“I will think of other things for them to do in the future,” she said.
Roosevelt’s RachelWarner, 6, said the flowers will help make Roosevelt prettier.
“I like living in Roosevelt a lot because it’s really pretty,” she said.
Alyssa Grillo, 7, Carly Haug, 7, Elizabeth Gordon, 8, Carly Roberts, 8, and Kelliane Lepore, 7, also helped plant the flowers.
