Sen. Singer receives
highway safety award
Sen. Robert W. Singer (R-30) of Lakewood was named the recipient of the Pioneer Award of the New Jersey Coalition Against Impaired Driving.
The award was presented to Singer at the Impaired Driving Forum that was sponsored by the Impaired Driving Coalition in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the N.J. Department of Law and Public Safety and the N.J. Division of Highway Traffic Safety, which took place in Jamesburg.
The senator received the Pioneer Award in the category of legislation. An advocate of legislative measures and initiatives that promote safety on the road, Singer was the sponsor of extended instruction of young and inexperienced drivers through the graduated licensing bill, which mandates additional training and restrictions under supervised conditions until full driving privileges are issued.
According to a press release, the initiative has proven successful in other states in reducing the death and injury rate among young drivers.
Singer, whose district includes portions of Ocean, Monmouth, Mercer and Burlington counties, said "It is truly an honor to receive this award from organizations who work so hard to foster safety initiatives. I share in their mission to make driving in New Jersey as safe as possible and have always tried to convey the message whenever possible through legislation, programs and education."
Included in the Singer’s public safety initiatives is the distribution of literature on the dangers associated with drinking and driving, as well as other brochures dealing with safety issues such as car seats, bicycle safety and seat-belt law.
