Voting no to budget ended up hurting Hazlet’s kids

Only after 12 hours after a crushing defeat to the school budget, I can only hope everyone who came out and voted to support our children will continue to do so, and thank you. And for those who came out to shut so many doors to our children’s future achievements, you should be ashamed of yourselves. If anyone believed the many untruths of Rich Kohler (“Hazlet residents urged to vote no on school budget,” April 12) you should have asked him how this Board of Education and the current administration helped and supported him in the past.

We as a community have been very fortunate over the past several years since passing school budgets and our children have reaped the benefits. On a daily basis, we drop off and pick up, and not often enough do we reflect on the level of education our children are getting. This can only come from the superb teachers that our taxes pay for.

Our children can achieve greatness; and for the cost of a Starbucks coffee, the no votes decided the children weren’t worth it. Furthermore, if you think our taxes are high now, just wait and then ask yourself: Why are my kids not going on field trips or why don’t we have a student awareness counselor in all our schools, which is so vital to the growth of our children?

The answer is, because you retaliated against increasing taxes and wanted to send a message to the BOE or the township and voted no. Well, wrong answer – you voted and ended up hurting our kids.
