Hazlet library to host events in August

The Hazlet library will host the following events during August:

 “Map Wallets,” 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1. Take your favorite map and transform it into a wallet. This wallet fits perfectly into a back pocket and can hold a few of the necessities you use all the time. The program is for grade six and up.

 “Novel Destinations: Chinese” language classes, 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, 8 and 15. The program offers a six-week introduction to the Chinese language. Each class, designed for non-Chinesespeaking adults, will include basic pronunciation and Chinese characters and phrases. The instructor is Holmdel resident Lyndon Pan, a teacher at the Jersey Shore Chinese School.

 “Credit Reports and Credit Scores: Getting the Most Mileage from Credit,” 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3. Learn how to obtain, read, understand and dispute inaccurate information on your credit report. Discover how a credit score can affect more than your ability to establish or re-establish credit. Workbook included. The program is presented by Maura Attari of Money Management International.

 “World of Magic Show,” 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4. Celebrate the end of the Summer Reading program with Magician Brian Richards as he tickles the imagination with magic tricks from all over the world. Tickets will be available at the door. Children age 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

 “Schultute: Craft from Germany,” 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16. Children will construct a schultute cone to fill with school supplies. For ages 6 and up. Registration is required, and space is limited. Sign-up is in-person only and begins Aug. 9.

 “Mock Apple Pie: USA,” 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. Listen to an American story and make a fragrant apple pie craft. Ages 3½ to 5 years old. Sign-up is in-person only and begins Aug. 9.

 “Open Mic Night for Spoken-Word Artists,” 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22. Share your art and enjoy the talents and messages of others. This program is coordinated by local spoken-word artist Mark Baird, who has performed in New York City as well as local venues. His second anthology of poetry, “Idiom II,” drawn from his poetry ’zine of the same name, was recently released. Participants ages 16 and older are invited. Performers can sign in upon arrival.

 “Zen Meditation,” 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29. Learn and/or practice meditation in the Chinese Chan (Zen) tradition. The two-hour program incorporates sitting and moving sessions, including yoga exercise, self-massage and walking meditation. Instruction for beginners is available. Sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of the Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association.
