Francine Latorraca is using her talent to support the troops. The Aberdeen photographer is offering her services free to any members of the military who would like to capture their special moments on film.
Latorraca has been taking pictures since she was 4 years old for her own enjoyment, and began her business Fotography by Francine about a year ago. She decided to offer free photography to armed service members after shooting the weddings of friends’ children who were in the military.
“A lot of them were young kids, and they’re just so in love. … You just had to be there, it’s almost magical,” Latorraca said.
Latorraca said many soldiers cannot afford to pay the $2,000-$3,000 for wedding photos, and she finds it gratifying to be able to give something back to those who serve. When she photographs weddings for soldiers, she puts together albums for the bride and groom, as well as their parents.
Her usual rate for a standard wedding package is $550. Latorraca’s offer also extends to baby pictures, showers, or any other special occasions that could be captured on film.
Latorraca photographed friend Anne Miller’s son, a Marine, and his wife on their wedding day, a couple of months before he was sent to Iraq.
“She’s very giving. That’s the kind of person she is,” Miller said of her friend.
Latorraca attended Catholic school growing up, and always wanted to be a nun. After several weeks in the convent, she decided it was a bit too strict, and opted to give of herself in other ways. She later left a job with the U.S. Postal Service in order to devote her time to volunteer work and her family. She is married, with three children and four dogs.
Her close friends with children in the military were the inspiration for offering her time and skills to those in the service.
“They’ve done enough for this country, and I figured I would do a little something in return,” Latorraca said.
Latorraca specializes in natural lighting, and said she often takes candid shots. She said these elements give her photographs a quality that makes them stand out. For more information, call Fotography by Francine at (732) 687-0624.
