NEWTON P. POLICASTRO, 66, of Matawan died Oct. 13 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge. Born in Newark, he lived in Irvington, Kearny and Old Bridge before moving to Matawan 20 years ago. He was the director of special services for the Hazlet school system for 30 years, retiring in 1966. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Laurence Harbor. His memberships included the Hazlet Teachers Association, the New Jersey Education Association, the National Education Association, and he was past president of the Hazlet Township Administrators Association. He was predeceased by his first wife, Beverly Policastro, in 1992; and a sister, Joanne Borger, in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Dunn Policastro of Matawan; a daughter, Cyndee Policastro-Smith of Toms River; a son, Patrick Policastro of Monmouth Beach; three sisters, Patricia Mercadante of Chatham, and Lydia DiBiase and Janice Padavano, both of Newark; and three grandchildren.
JAMES MICHAEL CAMPBELL, 79, of Durham, N.C., and formerly Hazlet, died Oct. 10 at home. Born in Bayonne, he was a Hazlet resident for several years. He was a mechanic at Monsanto several years until retirement. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary T. Campbell in 1988; and a son, James M. Campbell. He is survived by three daughters, Kathy Martin, Mary Ellen Owens, and Maureen Kester, all of Durham, N.C.; his son, John Campbell of Durham; his sister, Winifred Clougher of Edison; his brother, John Campbell of Bayonne; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Interment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.
ELIZABETH V. KIRBY, 71, of Keyport died Oct. 11 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a lifelong Keyport resident. She was a long-distance operator at Bell Atlantic South, Holmdel, retiring in 1985. Prior to that, she worked at the Keyport Board of Education for eight years. She was also a civilian employee for the U.S. government, working as a radio cryptographer during World War II and the Korean conflict. She was a member of the Maranatha Baptist Church, Hazlet. Her memberships included past president of the Keyport P.T.A.; the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4247, Keyport; and the Keyport First Aid Squad Ladies Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her husband, John C. "Rip" Kirby Jr. in 1993. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Arlene Kirby III of Hazlet; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Barbara E. and Robert Scott of Rotonda West, Fla., Carol M. and Lloyd Mahler of Keansburg, Janet K. and Ron Marino of Huntsville, Ala., and Sharon Kirby-Magill of Keyport; her mother-in-law, Agnes Shive Kirby of Long Island, N.Y.; her sister, Jessie Hires of Philadelphia, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service was offered at First Baptist Church of Keyport. Interment was at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
LILLIAN T. WOOD, 87, of the Belford section of Middletown, died Oct. 11 at Meridian Rehabilitation, Brick Township. Born in Jersey City, she resided there until moving to the Middletown area 50 years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Willard Wood; a daughter, Carol Schwarz; and a brother, Charles Kaiser. She is survived by two sons, Willard Wood of Delaware, and Daniel Wood of Belford; two daughters, Terry Wood of Middletown, and Ann Borden of Brick Township; two brothers, Albert Kaiser, and Edward Kaiser, both of New Jersey; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial was at Crest Haven Cemetery, Clifton.
/iWILLIAM F. SCOTT JR., 64, of Union Beach died Oct. 16 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Jersey City, he resided in East Keansburg prior to moving to Union Beach 38 years ago. He was a retired manager at Red Bank Liquor, Red Bank. He was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. He was predeceased by his father, William F. Scott Sr. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Theresa McGuire Scott of Union Beach; his mother, Antoinette Scott of Lake Hiawatha; five sons and four daughters-in-law, William F. and Diana Scott III of Bricktown, Daniel T. and Robin Scott of South Carolina, Richard A. and Shirley Scott of California, Steven A. and Elaine Scott of Middletown, and James A. Scott of Middletown; four brothers, Lawrence Scott of Pennsylvania, John Scott of Lake Hopatcong, Paul Scott of Connecticut, and Michael Scott of Rockaway; two sisters, Judy Scott of Pennsylvania, and Annette Scott of Lake Hiawatha, and 14 grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach.
GEORGE "CHUCK" P. BOLTE, 82, of Keyport died Oct. 17 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Keyport, he was a lifelong resident. He was a lab technician at National Lead, Sayreville, for 28 years, retiring in 1976. He was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. He was a past member and president of the Keyport Board of Education. His activities included sailing, and he was a past member of Keyport Yacht Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Bolte in 1991. He is survived by three sons, Christopher Bolte, John Bolte, and Michael Bolte, all of Keyport; and four grandchildren. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y.
CHARLES LIEDY, 67, of Hazlet died Oct. 7 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, West Brighton, N.Y. Born in New Brighton, N.Y., he lived in several New Jersey towns prior to moving to Hazlet six years ago. He was a co-owner of Liedy’s Shore Inn, New Brighton, as well as a motor vehicle operator at the U.S. Postal Service, New York City, retiring in 1999. Prior to that, he worked at Brinks, New York City. He served with the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort MacArthur, Calif., during which time he appeared as an extra in the Jerry Lewis film The Sad Sack. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Assumption Council, West Brighton, N.Y. His activities included rooting for the N.Y. Yankees and Giants. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dorothy Kostka Liedy of Hazlet; his son, Charles T. Liedy of Hazlet; his daughter, Sharon M. Borrelli of Keyport; two brothers, James Liedy, and Larry Liedy; and five sisters, Lorene Tarloff, Audrey Frisch, Bernadette Smith, Ronnie Reardon, and Lenaye McGill. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, Staten Island, N.Y. Burial was at Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island.
EDMUND F. WALKER, 88, of Keyport died Aug. 24 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. He was born in Matawan, and was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Hazlet. He was also a life member and past chief of the Keyport Volunteer Fire Department, and Eagle Hose Fire Department; as well as a life member of the Midway Fire Department, Matawan. He was a member of both the Keyport and Hazlet Seniors. He was predeceased by two sons, Donald A. Walker and Robert J. Walker. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Holliday Walker of Keyport; his brother, Donald H. Walker of Matawan; and several nieces and nephews.
