Soccer League thanks supporters for field

The Aberdeen-Matawan Soccer League (AMSL) is pleased to announce that on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. the Strathmore Elementary School soccer field will be dedicated.

This past spring, the league kicked off its inaugural game at the new Matawan Regional High School soccer field. These two soccer facilities help to alleviate a shortage of fields in our communities precipitated by a threefold increase in players participating in the league’s program during the last decade.

On behalf of the board of directors of AMSL, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank John Barbato who initiated the dialogue with the superintendent of schools and members of the Matawan-Aberdeen Board of Education to help address our league’s field issue. Michael Klavon was instrumental in identifying the state program designed to support funding of projects in which municipal governments, school districts and nonprofit organizations work together for the common good of the communities we serve.

The AMSL board would also like to commend the mutual cooperation exhibited by Aberdeen and Matawan councils. We sincerely appreciate the contributions of state Sen. Joseph Kyrillos, Sen. John O. Bennett, Assemblymen Joseph Azzolina and Samuel Thompson of the Legislature to obtain approval of funding for the Strathmore School site. Financing for the Matawan Regional High School soccer field development project was achieved with the cooperation and support of Aberdeen Township Manager Marc Coren, Mayor David Sobel and Deputy Mayor Owen Drapkin.

We’d like to thank all the above individuals for their hard work and determination in helping our group accomplish its goal of providing our children with soccer facilities that we can all be proud of.
