Vessel safety checks
to be offered by flotilla
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 24, Keyport, reminds the public that National Safe Boating Week will be May 18-25, and encourages boaters to make sure boats have all federal and state required equipment.
Flotilla 24 will offer free vessel safety checks May 18, and June 1 and 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The boat checks will be at the Keyport marine basin and Keyport boat ramp. All boats, including wave runners, will be checked.
Auxiliary examiners will perform the checks, which may be done in or out of the water. All vessels passing will receive a decal.

The Brush & Palette Art Guild of Keyport will hold its next meeting May 21 at 7 p.m. at the James J. Cullen Building, 1776 Union Ave., Hazlet. The public is welcome to attend.

Democrats to discuss smart growth in Holmdel
The Holmdel Democrats will sponsor a presentation by New Jersey Future, "Smart Growth and Holmdel: Perfect Together" May 9 at 8 p.m. at Holmdel High School, Crawfords Corner Road.
New Jersey Future is a nonpartisan coalition of planners, builders, and conservationists with the goal of "sustainable growth" or "smart growth."
The free presentation will feature topics such as smart zoning, and Mount Laurel housing logistics. Featured speaker will be land use expert Samuel Hamill

‘Interviewing Skills’ slated for May 22, 29
Matawan-Aberdeen Library, 165 Main St., Matawan, will present the program, "Interviewing Skills" May 22 and 29 at 7 p.m. Attendance at both sessions is recommended. The free program will be given by Vinny Bhatt, executive director of Saar Ltd.

Middletown Garden Club plant sale May 10, 11
The Middletown Garden Club is holding its annual plant sale May 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and May 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Little Red School House, Middletown-Lincroft Road, Middletown.
This year’s focus will be on drought resistant plants. Annuals, perennials, geraniums, hanging baskets, vegetables and herbs will be available for purchase. A master gardener will also be available to answer gardening questions.
Proceeds will benefit care and maintenance of the Little Red School House building and grounds where the club will celebrate its 60th anniversary June 26.

St. John Vianney booster club golf classic May 20
The St. John Vianney booster club will hold its eighth annual golf classic May 20 at Hollywood Country Club, Deal. Cost is $325 per golfer, and spaces are limited.

Mother’s Day Colonial Tea at Poricy May 12
Poricy Park, Oak Hill Road, Middletown, will hold various events in May, beginning with a Mother’s Day Colonial Tea May 12 at 1 p.m.
"Magic or Science?" will be presented for children in grades 3-5 May 23 from 4-5:30 p.m., and a presentation on animal rehabilitation will be May 29 at 7:30 p.m.
The park’s programs based on the Harry Potter series will continue with "Hedwig’s Heritage" June 5 from 4-5:30 p.m. The free program is for children in grades 3-5.

Spring events planned by Newcomers Club
The Middletown Newcomers Club will hold a "Ladies Night Out" May 14 at the Bistro Bar, Middletown. Cost is $47 for nonmembers and $45 for members; reservations are required.
A trip to Longstreet Farm, Holmdel, will be held May 21 and will feature a tour of the farm and a wagon ride around Holmdel Park.
A "Spring Cocktail Party" will be held June 1. The fee is $10 per person. A trip to Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport, will be June 23.
