FISH program adds two new courses for fall

The New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium, Sandy Hook, has expanded its fall Families Investigate Science Hands-On (FISH) program to four topics. The five-week program runs Saturdays and Sundays Sept. 15-Oct. 21. Cost of each program is $8 for adults and $6 for children age 18 and younger.

The four topics offered are "Marsh and Ocean Study," "Salt Marsh Study," "On Sandy Shores," and "Fabulous Flora," which are two new 2001 programs.

"Flora" will explore the plants of the coastal environment and how the Lenni Lenape Indians used coastal plants.

"Shores" will investigate the composition of sand crystals from various beach areas, as well as seashells and the animals living inside them. A guided seashell hunt, and a "sand wheel" craft.

Baykeeper seeking

oyster enthusiasts

The N.Y./N.J. Baykeeper, Sandy Hook, will host a free workshop Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Education Center at Sandy Hook. The workshop will train volunteers to raise oysters at backyard piers.

Attendees will be trained and given everything needed to grow 1,500 small (3/4 inch) "seed" oysters until the end of next summer. The oysters are kept in floating cages which help protect them from predators.

Baykeeper intends to have volunteers at more than 50 New York/New Jersey sites. Potential volunteers include school groups, scout troops, families and civic groups.

St. Mary’s travel group plans December trips

St. Mary’s travel group, New Monmouth section of Middletown, will sponsor a day trip to Stroudsburg, Pa., Dec. 1 at 8:30 a.m. to see the "sight-and-sound" show The Miracle of Christmas. Cost is $85, which covers transportation, dinner, taxes and tips. Reservations must be prepaid by Sept. 15.

A trip to see the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, is scheduled for Dec. 30 at 10:30 a.m. There will be time following the 1 p.m. show to have lunch and sightsee. Cost is $86 which covers transportation and orchestra seats. Reservations must be prepaid by Sept. 20.

VFW’s ‘Halfway to St. Patrick’s’ dance Sept. 15

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179 and Ladies Auxiliary, Middletown, will hold its "Halfway to St. Patrick’s Dinner Dance" on Sept. 15 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the post home, 1 Veterans Lane, Port Monmouth section of Middletown.

Cost is $30 per person, and tables for 10 or more may be reserved. Entertainment will be provided by Willie Lynch, and a performance by Denogla School of Irish Dancing will be featured.

SPUR’s sixth annual ‘Polo Day’ Sept. 16

Special People United to Ride (SPUR), Middletown, will host its sixth annual "Polo Day" Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. (gates open at 12:30 p.m.). The event, in conjunction with Colts Neck Polo, will be at Bucks Mill Park, Bucks Mill Road, Colts Neck. Rain date is Oct. 30. The match will feature skills demonstrations, a 50/50 and musical entertainment.

Tailgate parking passes are available for $75 and $125, and include admission for a party of six. General admission is $10 per person; free for children age 12 and younger. Proceeds will benefit SPUR’s retirement fund, providing long-term care for its horses.

Democratic Party to offer casino trip Sept. 16

The Middletown Democratic Party will sponsor a fund-raiser bus trip to the Showboat Casino, Atlantic City, Sept. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. The bus will depart from Democratic headquarters at 98 Railroad Ave., Belford section of Middletown. 2001 SIDS Walkathon at Thompson Park Sept. 16

Wawa and the C.J. Foundation for SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) will sponsor the 2001 SIDS Walkathon at various locations statewide on Sept. 16 at 8:15 a.m. (walk begins at 9 a.m.) A five-mile walk will be at Thompson Park, Newman Springs Road, Lincroft section of Middletown. Sheriff’s office to offer free photo IDs Sept. 19

The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office will provide free photo identification cards for seniors Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. at We Care Adult Care, 500 Route 35, Middletown. The cards will be provided as part of the sheriff’s office’s IDENT-ADULT" program.
