Walks, tours at Sandy Hook during September

Gateway National Park at Sandy Hook will present a Lenape nature walk led by a park ranger Sept. 9 at 2 p.m.

“Going Bunkers” will be held Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Fort Hancock Museum. Bring a flashlight to the two-hour presentation; reservations are required.

A tribute in light will be held Sept. 11, 7-10 p.m., at the north beach observation deck.

“On Sandy Shores” will be held Sept. 16 and 30 at 11 a.m. at the N.J. Marine Sciences Consortium (NJMSC) at Fort Hancock, and “School of Fish” Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m., both at building 22.

“Battery Gunnison Preserved” will be held Sept. 17, 1-4 p.m. at Gunnison beach. Attendees may view the gunnison and speak with the group working on the restoration.

A holly forest ramble will be held Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. and consist of a walk through the 64-acre forest led by a ranger.

“Junior Rangers” for children ages 7-12 will be held Sept. 21 at 4 p.m., featuring a walk on a beach trail with a ranger; reservations are required.

A fall equinox shore walk is set for Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at Guardian Park. The American Littoral Society will lead the two-mile walk; attendees should bring a flashlight. For reservations, call (732) 291-0055.

“Incredible Crustaceans” will be presented by NJMSC Sept. 23 at 1:30 p.m., and a salt marsh investigation will be offered Sept. 24 at 11 a.m., both at building 22 at Fort Hancock.

Cold War Day will be held Sept. 24 from noon to 4 p.m. at the parking lot at Horseshoe Cove; attendees will visit a Nike missile radar site and see Cold War-era military displays.

“Happiness is a Horseshoe Crab” will be presented by NJMSC Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m. at building 22, and “Lenape and the Jersey Shore” will be offered Sept. 30 at 11 a.m.

A monarch butterfly walk will be led by a park ranger Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. at the visitor center.

Submissions of door photos now accepted

The New Jersey Historic Preservation Office is seeking images of New Jersey’s doors and doorways to commemorate the 40th anniversaries of the National Historic Preservation Act, the New Jersey Historic Trust, and the New Jersey Historic Sites Council. Submission deadline is Dec. 1.

Selected images will be published on a poster to be produced for the 2007 annual New Jersey Historic Preservation Conference. Winners will also receive one free registration to the conference. Multiple images may be submitted, and should be color and have portrait orientation. Submissions should include the location the photo was taken, and name and mailing address. Original photos (no smaller than three inches by five inches) may be submitted to: NJ Doors, c/o Historic Preservation Office, P.O. Box 404, Trenton 08505 Digital images must be a minimum of 1,500 by 900 pixels, and may be submitted via e-mail to [email protected], with “NJ Doors” in the subject line.

Bon Jovi, Tipper Gore to be honored at 180 gala

180 Turning Lives Around Inc., Hazlet, will host its 30th anniversary gala Sept. 16 at a celebration on the Navesink River. The fundraiser is the largest special event in the agency’s history, and will honor guests Tipper Gore and Jon Bon Jovi.

Gore has been named one of the “10 most admired women in the world,” and is an advocate for issues of mental health, homelessness, and violence in the media. “I am honored to join in the celebration of 180’s 30-year anniversary,” she commented.

Bon Jovi, an advocate for local charity work, is co-owner of the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul, which partnered with 180 to launch the 2nd Floor youth helpline in Philadelphia. “As a musician and father, I am proud to be a part of the 30th anniversary celebration,” said Bon Jovi.

The event will feature dancing, cuisine by Restaurant Nicholas, Middletown, and music by Bobby Bandiera. Proceeds benefit 180’s mission to end family violence, abuse and sexual assault.

Gelatos event, tot shabbat slated by temple

The Young Jewish Professionals Group of Temple Beth Ahm, 5 Ayrmont Lane, Aberdeen, will sponsor “Young Jewish Professionals Gelatos by the Beach” Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Carmella’s Cafe at Pier Village, Centennial Drive, Long Branch..

A tot shabbat for children age 3-5, and families will be Sept. 15 and Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. The service will feature age-appropriate prayers, songs, stories and dances. Nonmembers are welcome. The Temple Tots parent/child program for children ages 2 1/2-5 will be Oct. 8 at 9:30 a.m. The program is offered five Sundays during the year, with each focusing on a different Jewish holiday. The program will teach about Sukkot through activities such as crafts, storytelling, and songs.

Annual Aberdeen Day slated for Sept. 9

Aberdeen Township Recreation Department will present the 11th annual Aberdeen Day Sept. 9 from noon to 5 p.m. at the athletic fields at Matawan Regional High School, Atlantic Avenue, Aberdeen.

The free event will feature a crafts show, antiques show and displays of the apparatus and vehicles used by the township’s fire departments and first aid and rescue squads. There will also be rides, various foods, and children’s activities. Musical performances will be by Code 3 and the Matawan Regional High School band. There will also be shows by Ronald McDonald, A Touch of Dance, the David Flecher Magic Show, Peanut Butter-Jammin, and Rebound Gymnastics. Matawan author to read at poetry event Sept. 13

Poetry Without Borders, Freehold, will present its “Cornerstone Poetry Series” with poet and humorist Bob McKenty Sept. 13 at Cornerstone Caffe and Restaurant, 2 E. Main St., Freehold. Individuals wishing to order a meal should arrive by 7:30 p.m., and desserts and beverages are available throughout the evening.

Matawan resident McKenty is the author of “Fair Game: Open Season on Baseball.” He will shed new light on one of America’s favorite pastimes, and sign copies of the book. An open mic will follow. McKenty’s work centers on parodies of famous poems and songs.

He gives an annual recitation at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and Ralph Kiner recited one of his baseball poems on a Mets telecast.

The series takes place the second Wednesday of each month.

Farm to host ‘Celebrate the Arts’ event Sept. 10

The Bayonet Farm Advisory Committee and Holmdel Department of Parks & Recreation will hold its annual music and arts festival, “Celebrate the Arts,” Sept. 10 from noon to 6 p.m. at Bayonet Farm, 41 Middletown Road, Holmdel.

The event will feature live music, homemade foods, a sculpture garden, demonstrations such as the art of aikido and a potter’s wheel, tethered balloon rides at $10 per person, a puppet show and other activities. Attendees may enter an art contest, themed “Seasons of Bayonet Farm.” Artwork must be at the farm before noon and will be judged by attendees. Rufus to appear at Community Day

Bayshore Community Hospital, 727 N. Beers St., will welcome Rufus, best in show at the 2006 Westminster Kennel Club Show, at its Community Day and treasure hunt Sept. 16 beginning at 9 a.m.

Interfaith Neighbors to open youth corps chapter

Interfaith Neighbors has announced its agreement with the New Jersey Youth Corps, Department of Labor, to operate its Monmouth County chapter (formerly the Asbury Park chapter).

The program is designed to help Monmouth County men and women age 16-25 that are no longer in school to achieve a high school education. It is designed to give each Corps member between six to 12 months of training, which includes a schedule of community service work.

Interfaith Neighbors is in the process of completing a renovation project at its 810 Fourth Ave. location to provide training and classroom space, and orientation and program participation for new Corps members should begin in the next four to six weeks.

Café Night, Downtown Swing Festival Sept. 8

The Matawan Alliance will present a “Café Night and Downtown Swing Music Festival” Sept. 8 from 7-10 p.m. on Main Street.

The event will feature music by The Swing Band, Fred Lahotay and his Melody Men, and The Jersey Bounce. Jazz concert for Save Sandy Hook Sept. 10

Save Sandy Hook will hold a fundraiser featuring the Leif Arntzen jazz trio Sept. 10 from 4-6 p.m. at the riverfront home of Judge James and Judith Stanley Coleman, Middletown. Coleman is president of Save Sandy Hook.

Concert proceeds will help support the group’s legal efforts to keep businesses out of Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook. The event will also feature cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Leif Arntzen is a singer, songwriter, trumpeter and guitarist. He lives and works in New York City with his band tlab. His works feature moody melodies, and are described as “original-acoustic-slightly-psychedelic-folky-rock” sound. Lecture, book signing at Vietnam Center Sept. 9

The Vietnam Era Education Center, Holmdel, will host an author lecture and book signing Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. Vietnam veteran Carey J. Spearman will give the lecture and sign his latest book, “36 Years and a Wake-up: An American Returns to Vietnam.”

Spearman of Staten Island, N.Y., served with the 44th Medical Group, 616th Medical Company in Vietnam in 1967 and returned home in 1968.

He was with the New York City Police Department from 1973 to 1995.

His book consists of poetic vignettes about his thoughts following his first trip back to the former battleground after 36 years.

The Michael Gerard Puharic Memorial Foundation Inc., Aberdeen, will host a steel drum reggae and hand-rolled cigar event Sept. 8 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Bar Anticipation, 16th Avenue, Belmar.

The nonprofit will also present Jersey Shore University Medical Center with $10,000 to benefit the purchase of a giraffe omni bed for its neo-natal intensive care unit. RACES to offer amateur radio class

The Middletown Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES) is sponsoring a one-day, entry-level amateur radio class with date to be announced as the free class fills.
