MARLBORO — The Marlboro Public Library, 1 Library Court, will welcome Dr. Eve Jochnowitz to discuss Fania Lewando’s Vegetarian Cookbook, translated, annotated and adapted for the modern kitchen, published this year as “The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook.” The program will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 7.
The book, which was originally published in Vilna in 1937, is filled with vivid and sometimes astonishing recipes for vegetables, drawn from Jewish tradition, from European cuisine, from the emerging health food movement, and some entirely new inventions, according to a press release.
The book was part of a numerically small, but culturally relevant wave of works in the Yiddish language on vegetarianism. This presentation will look at Fania Lewando’s extraordinary book in the context of the Jewish vegetarianism of her own time, according to the press release.
Registration for the Dec. 7 program is mandatory. Space is limited. Call the library at 732-536-9406 beginning Nov. 9 to register. The Marlboro Board of Trustees will be selling copies of “The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook” for $25 to benefit library programming. Jochnowitz will sign copies. Reserve a book when you call to register.
