Plantar fasciitis can be helped with physical therapy

Crest Physical Therapy frequently treats plantar fasciitis, a common foot condition that causes heel pain. It occurs in as many as 2 million Americans per year and 10 percent of the population over their lifetimes.

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue connecting the heel to the ball of the foot that can become inflamed or can tear. The pain is usually worst right after getting up in the morning, during extended periods of standing, or when getting up from prolong seated position. The pain can be felt at the heel, or along the arch and the ball of the foot.

Factors that contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis include:

 age (most common between 40-60)

a job, sport, or hobby that involves standing or other weight-bearing activity

rapid increases in length or levels of activity, such as beginning a new running program or changing to a job that requires a lot more standing or walking than you are accustomed to

 decreased calf muscle flexibility

 increased body weight

 flat foot or high arch

At Crest Physical Therapy, they design an individual program for every patient based on your initial examination. Your treatment may include stretching and strengthening exercises to improve flexibility and stability of your ankle and the plantar fascia, selection of supportive footwear and/or shoe inserts that minimize stress to the plantar fascia, application of modalities and manual therapy to decrease pain and inflammation, and taping of the foot to provide pain relief.
