FREEHOLD — The Freehold Borough Historic Preservation Commission is seeking nominations for its three annual awards honoring local residents and business persons for their dedication to preserving the architecture and appearance of historic Freehold.
Each year, the commission honors with its Preservation Award the local homeowner or business owner who has exhibited preservation of an historic structure over a period of time, as well as a Restoration Award to honor a business owner or homeowner who has exhibited historic preservation through recent renovations to a structure in keeping with its historic significance.
This year, for the first time, the commission will also award the Steinberg Award, named for former commission member Carl Steinberg.
This award will go to the commercial property whose owner has exhibited a strong dedication toward the historic preservation of a Freehold structure.
According to a press release, Steinberg’s renovations of the original firehouses on Throckmorton Street are a classic example of the type of dedication which will earn this award.
Nominations for the Preservation Award can cite any local owner who has maintained an historic residence or business, regardless of whether any recent renovations or changes have been made. The Restoration Award honors the property owner who has made renovations over the past year which either preserve or restore historic significance to the property.
Commission members are also making their own recommendations for each of the awards, but are seeking input from the community to ensure all properties deserving of the distinction are recognized.
All recommendations must be received by the commission by May 12 in order to be considered at the May 14 meeting.
Individuals with nominations or recommendations for any of the awards, or questions about the program, should contact Jeff Friedman at 908-614-6195, or send photos and information to the Freehold Borough Historic Preservation Commission, Borough Hall, East Main Street, Freehold, NJ 07728. All entries will be considered and reviewed by the commission at its May 14 meeting.
