Voters say yes to reducing open space tax

MARLBORO — Residents who went to the polls on Election Day, Nov. 2, voted to reduce Marlboro’s open space tax rate from 2 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to 1 cent per $100 of assessed valuation.

The open space tax rate and the local dollars it raises based on the assessed value of all properties in town supports the purchase and preservation of open space and farmland in the community.

According to unofficial results, 5,508 people voted to lower the open space tax rate and 2,763 people voted not to lower the open space tax rate.

When the adjustment in Marlboro’s open space tax rate is made, the owner of a home that is assessed at $150,000 will see the amount he pays into the open space fund on an annual basis decrease from $30 to $15.

The owner of a home that is assessed at $300,000 will see the amount he pays into the open space fund on an annual basis decrease from $60 to $30.

The owner of a home that is assessed at $450,000 will see the amount he pays into the open space fund on an annual basis decrease from $90 to $45.

The owner of a home that is assessed at $600,000 will see the amount he pays into the open space fund on an annual basis decrease from $120 to $60.

The owner of a home that is assessed at $800,000 will see the amount he pays into the open space fund on an annual basis decrease from $160 to $80.
