MANALAPAN — Carlee Wines, a Manalapan High School graduate, was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street at the University of Connecticut, Jan. 22, 2007.
Family, friends and community members have since been honoring Carlee’s life with the Carlee A. Wines Memorial 5-Mile Run/Walk. Carlee trained and ran the Spring Lake 5 in the spring of her senior year of high school as part of her Peer Leadership goal.
On May 16, hundreds of people plan to once again participate in the walk/run to honor Carlee and all the joy she brought to so many lives. The event will begin at Manalapan High School, 30 Church Lane, with registration starting at 8 a.m. The race will end on the Manalapan High School track.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Carlee A. Wines Memorial Scholarship and will be awarded to students in financial need who embody the leadership, character and energy that Carlee possessed.
With this race, Carlee’s friends and family hope to emulate her character by turning a tragedy into something positive. Those who knew Carlee described her as “an energetic young woman who was always helping others. No matter how big or small the task, she was always there.”
