Resident begins new business

When Wendy Gold, of Manalapan, was looking to make her home wheelchair accessible so that she could have her mother-in-law for Thanksgiving, she never imagined she would find a new career in doing so.

When looking for a temporary wheelchair ramp for her mother-in-law, Gold discovered American Ramp Systems. At the time, Gold, who for the past 25 years operated her own computer software business, wasn’t actively looking for a new business venture.

However, she began looking at business opportunities. She eventually opened New Jersey’s fourth American Ramp Systems in May and will service clients in central and southern New Jersey.

American Ramp Systems, founded in 1998 as a division of Gordon Industries Inc., a Boston-based manufacturer of metal architectural products, is the nation’s leading producer of modular steel ramps designed for interior and exterior use in residential and commercial settings. Marketed as durable medical equipment (DME) to those who use wheelchairs and walkers, the ramps are available for sale or rental.

Gold said the company’s market includes several key segments: home healthcare, adults and children using wheelchairs and walkers, public and commercial facilities and rentals for vacations, family celebrations, graduations and elections. The company serves clients who have just experienced a medical trauma or who have pre-existing needs and want to add or replace a ramp in their living environment for either temporary or long-term use. A ramp can be installed within days.

“We’re really offering peace of mind for anyone bringing a loved one in a wheelchair into their home,” said Gold. “The ramp can be installed within days, no permits are required and you don’t even have to be at home. It’s one less thing to worry about during a very stressful time.”
