Judge James William (Bill) Boyle

Judge Boyle, 88, died April 26, 2012, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He graduated from St. Rose of Lima Elementary School, Freehold, in 1942. During World War II, he entered the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to the North Atlantic Unit Division Air Transport Command as a sergeant. He received the American Service Medal, the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Victory Medal. He had worked as a mail clerk for the FBI in Washington, D.C., for a year while attending night school at George Washington University. After the war, he graduated from Rutgers University and Rutgers University Law School and became a special agent of the FBI, where he served for four years. He began practicing law in Freehold in 1954 and became magistrate judge of Allentown and Upper Freehold Municipal Court, then magistrate of Freehold Township Municipal Court. Judge Boylewas the municipal attorney for Freehold and Manalapan, the mayor of Freehold for nine years, and Monmouth County surrogate for five years. He was a judge of State Workers Compensation for 13 years until retiring in 2000. He was also a member of the former Freehold and Freehold Township Lions Club; a member of the Freehold Regional Board of Education; Freehold Elks Club; St. Rose of Lima Knights of Columbus fourth degree; Monmouth County Bar Association; New Jersey State BarAssociation; and was president of the Freehold Borough Republican Club. He was predeceased by three sisters, Loretta Wilson, Helen Heiser and Mary Patricia Dorey; two brothers, Joseph (Gene) and George Boyle; and his wife of 64 years, Gloria. Surviving are two sons and daughters in law, William J. and Gail of Basking Ridge, and Patrick J. and Joanne of Freehold; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen D. and Ivan Palkovic of Maryland; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Freehold FirstAid Squad. Arrangements were under the direction of the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold.
