Some Starbucks stores have partnered with the nonprofit Sylvia’s Children to help raise funds for children in Africa. Sylvia’s Children is conducting a clothing drive through June 10 at 10 Starbucks locations in New Jersey. Participating locations are Middletown, Marlboro, Matawan, Manalapan, Edison, Westfield, East Brunswick, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, and Piscataway.

Items being accepted for the drive include all types of usable and wearable clothing for all seasons, shoes, handbags, belts, toys, linens, etc. For a complete list of items accepted for donation visit www.sylviaschildren.org. Donated items should be placed in 30-gallon black plastic bags and dropped in the collection boxes at the Starbucks’ locations listed above. Funds raised from the clothing drive will be used to finance a health clinic for the children at the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School in Uganda, Africa. Details: 732-946-2711.

The Freehold Home and Business Expo will be held from 4-7 p.m. May 22 at theAmerican Hotel, Freehold. The focus of the nonprofit event will be on innovation in homes and businesses. The event will feature 50 vendors, five speakers, a cash bar, giveaways at tables, and thousands of dollars in door prizes. All proceeds above the expense of the hotel will be donated to the Samaritan Center food pantry, which helps feed residents of Englishtown, Manalapan, Marlboro and Millstone Township who are struggling to make ends meet. Many of the vendors are also helping to support this cause, including Lew Zimkind or Marlboro, owner of From Gold 2 Green, who will be donating 15 percent from unwanted gold and silver jewelry transactions. Michael V. Toto has recently joined Open Systems Integrators Inc. as director of technical support, reporting to Bill Baroska, president. Toto will provide specialized technical support to the sales and operations departments at the company’s Manalapan headquarters and regional offices of the security integration and fire alarm firm.

Toto, a security professional since 1991, began his career as Manager of Communications Engineering for ADT. His background includes experience in engineering, operations, direct sales of security solutions, as well as management positions in each discipline.

The Monmouth County School Nurse Association is celebrating its 50th anniversary on May 9, the same day as National School Nurse Day. The association’s annual dinner meeting will be held at the Spring Lake Manor.

President Karen Kahn, RN, MSN, Certified School Nurse, Marlboro Elementary School, and the executive board have planned a special evening to commemorate this anniversary celebration.

State Assemblywoman, Mary Pat Angelini and Monmouth County Freeholder Director John P. Curley are expected to attend the event. Motivational speaker Eileen Strong will be the guest speaker for the evening.

Emiliani’s “Day of the Hairdresser” show made its debut recently at The Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. The event highlighted innovative displays of talent in the industry in an effort to bring attention to the important role that hair plays in the beauty and fashion industry.

The two-day extravaganza kicked off with a VIP party where famed celebrity hairdressers such as Robert Cromeans, Nicholas French, Phillip Wilson, Amit Abraham, Gina Khan, Patrick McIvor, Joseph DiMaggio, Jo Blackwell, Michael O’Rourke, Boyd Parris, Rafe Hardy, Tim Hartley, Leonel Rodriguez and Rocco Vitelli arrived ready to party along with their admiring fans.

Thousands of people turned out to the event, which featured avant-garde and high fashion looks as each artist created their own dream world on the runway. A highlight of the event was when Phillip Wilson cut a model’s hair while she hung upside down from cloths in a Cirque-du-Solei style performance.

Edwin J. McCreedy of Colts Neck, a former New Jersey State Bar Association president, has joined the Board of Trustees of Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ), an organization that provides legal help in civil matters to low-income residents. McCreedy, a former Marine captain, served as president of the New Jersey State Bar Association in 2004-05. He is a partner in the law office of McCreedy and Cox in Cranford and has been cited for the past eight years as being among New Jersey’s “super lawyers.” Legal Services of New Jersey, located in Edison, is the coordinating office for the state’s system of legal services programs, which provide essential legal aid in civil matters to low-income residents in all 21 counties.

Dr. Hal Ornstein of Affiliated Foot and Ankle was named as one of the most influential podiatrists in the country by “Podiatry Management Magazine,” a national practice management and business magazine that reaches more than 14,500 podiatrists.

The magazine reviewed thousands of podiatrists’ records before selecting about 150 physicians from across the country to honor as among the nation’s most influential podiatrists. The magazine chooses “America’s Most Influential Podiatrists” every five years.

Ornstein has been in private practice for more than 20 years and serves as medical director of Affiliated Foot and Ankle Center, with a main office in Howell and offices in Edison and Monroe Township. Orenstein lives in Howell with his wife, Anna, and their two boys.
