The Freehold Regional High School District has some new faces in high places. During its June 21 meeting the district’s Board of Education made several personnel appointments.
Assistant Superintendent Suzanne Koegler was appointed to serve as acting superintendent. In the upcoming year, Koegler will receive her $163,078 salary as assistant superintendent and a $1,500 monthly stipend for her extra responsibilities as the district’s acting superintendent.
She will succeed James Wasser, who is retiring as the FRHSD’s superintendent on June 30.
Officials said there must be an interim superintendent in place while a search is held for a new superintendent.
If the board had named an interim superintendent who is not a current employee of the district, that person would have been paid on a daily basis.
According to published reports, the Edison K-8 School District in Middlesex County (approximately 14,000 students) recently hired an interim superintendent at a rate of just under $900 per day.
The FRHSD has a total enrollment of about 11,800 pupils in six schools.
Koegler began her career in education in 1986 at Hudson County Community College before moving on to Bergen County Community College and Kean University. She has taught various subjects including English as a Second Language and science.
In an administrative role, Koegler worked for the Manville Board of Education as director of curriculum, instruction, technology and assessment. She joined the FRHSD in 2002, serving as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, moving to the position of assistant superintendent for human resources in 2007.
Koegler’s bachelor degree comes from William Paterson College, and she holds master’s degrees from Rutgers University and New York University. She received her doctorate from the Department of Teaching and Learning, a part of New York University’s School of Education.
Nicole Hazel, who most recently was acting as principal at Marlboro High School, will become the acting assistant superintendent of student services. She will succeed Patricia Emmerman, who is retiring on June 30.
In the upcoming year Hazel will receive her $124,503 salary as the district’s admin istrative supervisor for curriculum and instruction and a $1,000 monthly stipend for her duties as acting assistant superintendent of student services. She joined the FRHSD in 2008.
For the past few months she was the acting principal at Marlboro High School.
Hazel began her career at Ferris High School, Jersey City, where she taught from 1993-98. In November 1998, Hazel became vice principal of Ferris High School and in 2003 she was named principal.
Hazel has a bachelor’s degree from Providence College, a master’s degree from Jersey City State College and a doctorate from Seton Hall University.
Shaun Boylan has been named principal of Marlboro High School, succeeding Gerald North, who resigned effective June 30. Boylan will receive a salary of $141,638 in the upcoming year.
Boylan previously served as the assistant principal at Marlboro, before moving to Manalapan High School in 2009.
He began his career in 1984 as a special education teacher at Point Pleasant Borough High School.
Boylan came to the FRHSD in 2002, serving as supervisor of extracurricular activities at Marlboro. He moved up to assistant principal in 2004.
Boylan holds a bachelor’s degree from Rowan University and a master’s degree from Jersey City State University.
Marlboro’s representative on the FRHSD school board, Barry Hochberg, voted no on Boylan’s appointment without comment.
Voting in favor of Boylan’s appointment were Ron Lawson, Tom Caiazza, Christopher Placitella, Jennifer Sutera, Elizabeth Canario, Kathie Lavin and Heshy Moses.
Board member Bill Bruno was recorded as present, not taking action, on Boylan’s appointment as principal.
