Hayley Berman, a senior at Freehold Township High School and a resident of Freehold Township, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Molly Pitcher Woman’s Club/Manuel Gellman Scholarship Award on June 6.
The scholarship was presented to Berman in recognition of her hard work and dedication to her community. She is involved with the Friendship Circle organization which gives volunteers the opportunity to visit a child with special needs every week, as well as other community based organizations.
Berman will continue her education in art therapy at Pratt Institute, Brook-lyn, N.Y.
The Molly Pitcher Woman’s Club of Freehold was founded in 1967 and serves the Greater Freehold Community.

presents scholarships
The Colts Neck Education Foundation has announced its scholarship winners. According to a press release, Andrew Freddo graduated No. 1 in his class of 589 from Manalapan High School. He has received numerous academic awards in math and science on state, national and international levels. Freddo is also an accomplished competitive swimmer and musician. He volunteers at the Colts Neck Library, St. Mary’s Church and with the Colts Neck Community Band.
According to a press release, Alyssa Cantin and Erik Doughty could be twins. They graduated No. 4 and No. 5 in their class of 259.
Cantin and Doughty were each in the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. Both students have attended national youth leadership conferences.
Since their freshman year at Colts Neck High School both of these students actively participated in and organized many events for the Leo’s Club. Doughty played guitar and saxophone in the school band while Cantin danced her heart out at dozens of events.
Cantin will attend Wake Forest University and Doughty will study journalism and pre-law at Tufts University.
July 4th celebration
at Freehold Raceway
Freehold Borough will host its annual Independence Day celebration from 5:30-10 p.m. July Fourth at Freehold Raceway, Freehold Township.
Presented by the Freehold Center Partnership, the event will feature food vendors, live music, entertainment, amusements and games for children, and a fireworks display. Admission is free. Rain date is July 5.
“We host a traditional all-American celebration that’s a big attraction for families,” said Jayne Carr, executive director of the Freehold Center Partner-ship.
Entertainer Doug Young will perform juggling and magic acts on stilts dressed as Uncle Sam. Frank Watson and the Highlanders will play patriotic favorites on the bagpipes from 6-7:30 p.m., and the Bob Ferris Orchestra will perform from 7:30-9:15 p.m. After Casey Schuber sings the national anthem, the fireworks finale is scheduled to begin at 9:20 p.m.
