Manalapan’s Jason Bergmann is relief pitcher for the Harrisburg Senators, the AA affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Bergmann, a former Manalapan High School star who went on to Rutgers University, is starting his third professional season with the Nationals. Bergmann was an 11th pick out of Rutgers by the then Montreal Expos in 2002. The Expos have become the Washington Nationals.

The Senators play in the Eastern League, along with the Trenton Thunder and Delaware Blue Rocks.

The Freehold Boys U-11 fall season soccer tryouts will be held Tuesday and again on June 9 from 6-9 p.m. at Michael Tighe Park, Jackson Mills Road. There is no residency requirement to play for the U-11 team. Boys must be born on Aug. 1, 1994, or later to be eligible. The Jonas Angels All-Star Cheerleaders from Jonas Gymnastics Academy and Cheer Center, Morganville, captured the Eastern Cheerleading and Dance Association (ECDA) National Championship. The two-day event was held in Hershey, Pa.

The Angels are: Jannea Barbuto, Skylar Cagen, Caitlin Caverly, Samantha Falconite, Melanie Forman, Catherine Harris, Kaitlin Kavalar, Allie Lipkus, Emily Miller, Nicolette Sarantos, Danielle Schleiffer, Dana Tiberi, Emily Woloshen, Haley Woloshen and Lindsey Zybrick. The team is coached by Karissa Titus, Alyssa Bertucci and Heather Constantino.

Three other teams from Jonas competed at Heshey and did well. The Angels’ Junior team finished second, the Seniors third and the Angel Babies (mostly kindergartners) were eighth.

The Jonas Angles will be holding tryouts for the new season at their Morganville location on May 14 from 12-3 p.m. and May 15 from 6-9 p.m. The teams are for girls and boys ages 5-18. Jonas will be fielding an Open team (ages 18 & over) on May 14 from 7-10 p.m. The team draws from the Central Jersey area, as well as Middlesex and Ocean counties.

The New Jersey Jackals professional baseball team that plays in the Can-Am League, are calling out to baseball players to try out for the 2005 team on May 10 from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University in Upper Montclair. There is a $25 fee to participate in the tryout and players are required to bring all necessary equipment. As part of the Can-Am League, the Jackals play the Brockton Rox, Elmira Pioneers, New Haven County Cutters, North Shore Spirit, Les Capitales de Quebec, the Grays and the league’s newest team, the Worcester Tornadoes. The Jackals, the 2004 league champions, begin the 2005 season on the road May 26. Their first home game is June 2. The Atlantic City Surf, a professional baseball team that plays in the Atlantic League, will be presenting their Second Annual Father’s Day Fantasy Camp on Father’s Day, June 19. Cost for the camp is $100 and each father receives a continental breakfast, a batting practice pullover, a Surf hat, a Dietz and Watson BBQ Mitt Giveaway, four tickets to the game that day against the Newark Bears plus free parking. Highlight of the camp will be participation in a game at the Sandcastle Stadium. Fathers only need to bring a glove and a pair of sneakers or cleats. The Surf will provide ball, bats and helmets. Evaluations for the summer and fall Ice Hockey House leagues will take place on May 28 at the Wall Sports Arena on Wyckoff Road in Farmingdale. Children born in 1997 or younger (mites) will skate at 9:45 a.m., 1995-96 (squirts) at 3:45 p.m., and 1991-94 (pee-wee/bantam) at 5 p.m. In order to play in the summer or fall house leagues, players must be evaluated on this day. Anyone interested in playing for the Wall Americans limited Travel Hockey Club, designed to help players develop skills for future travel hockey teams, will also be evaluated at these times.
