The historic Van Cortlandt Golf Course in the Bronx, N.Y., the oldest public course in the United States, has reopened following extensive renovations. The par-70, 6,122-yard layout provides golfers of all ages and abilities with an exceptional challenge. The course, located right off the Major Deegan Expressway, ranges from a flat, links-like terrain to mountain-like holes with a picturesque view of the Riverdale area. The last session of the Kevin Boyle Basketball Camp will be held at A.L. Johnson High School in Clark from Aug. 13-17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with early drop-off available for girls and boys ages 7-16. Instruction is foremost with Boyle, head coach of the St. Patrick Celtics in Elizabeth. The final week’s special guest will be Duke University’s All-American guard Jason Williams. New for the Kevin Boyle Basketball Clinic is a personal training program — either individual or private workouts by appointment for boys and girls. The Twin Brook Golf Center, located at 1251 Jumping Brook Road in Tinton Falls, will host the Toyota Golf Skills Challenge, the world’s largest amateur multi-skill golf competition, on Sept. 14-16. The 21-city national tour, patterned after the professional EMC Golf Skills Challenge, is expected to have more than 400 area amateurs participating. The challenge, which takes about 2 1/2 hours to complete, tests participant in a series of eight skills, including long drive, short iron, trouble shot, greenside bunker, middle-iron shot, chip shot, pitch over hazard and putting. Players are given three attempts at each skill, with only the best shot counting toward their overall score. Divisions are offered for men (high and low handicaps), women, senior men (age 50 and older), juniors (ages 14-17) and kids (ages 8-13). Each of the Toyota Golf Skills Challenge city champions (the overall champion with the lowest score) will advance to the national finals, Nov. 2-3, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., for an opportunity to win a brand-new 2002 Toyota.
