to usher in the holidays

The Manalapan Battleground Sym-phony will present its annual holiday concert Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School, 155 Millhurst Road, Manalapan. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Chiu-Tze Lin is music director and conductor of the symphony orchestra which is sponsored by the Manalapan Parks and Recreation Department.

The concert will feature Carolyn Wu, a 17-year-old violinist from Red Bank, in a performance of "Carmen Fantasy" by Sarasate. Wu is the winner of the 2003 New Jersey Music Teachers Association competition in the Senior High School Strings Division.

Other highlights of the concert will be holiday classics such as "Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky, the "Blue Danube Waltz" by Strauss, which will be performed in its entirety, the "Christmas Festival" by Anderson, and "Festive Sounds of Hanukkah." The symphony will be joined by the prep orchestra, conducted by Angela McCurdy and Ning Mu, in the concert’s final number.

Event to honor veterans

of Battle of the Bulge

The Jewish War Veterans, Manal-apan-Marlboro Post 972, will hold a special breakfast program to remember and honor New Jersey’s survivors of the Battle of the Bulge. All veterans of the battle, without regard to religion, race or ethnicity, and their families are invited to attend. Reservations are required.

According to a press release from Post 972, more than 19,000 Americans were killed in that World War II battle against German forces, which took place during record cold temperatures on Dec. 16, 1944. The battle ended in a costly but decisive victory for American forces.

The light breakfast will be held at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 14 in the gymnasium of the Marlboro Jewish Center’s Chai Building, 46 Topanemus Road, Marlboro. The event will include a special military ceremony.

Invited guests include U.S. Sens. Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg, as well as National Guard Brig. Gen. Glenn K. Rieth, the adjutant general, New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. They have been asked to discuss and answer questions on veterans’ concerns.

Lecture on parenting

offered at Jewish center

The Freehold Jewish Center will sponsor a lecture, "Effective Parenting Skills: Family Interventions in Raising Teens," Dec. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the center, 59 Broad St., Freehold Borough. The program, part of the center’s Adult Education Lecture Series, will be presented by Larry Fisch, a licensed clinical social worker with 10 years of clinical experience providing psychotherapy to families, couples and individuals. Fisch supervises a team of therapists working with teens in a hospital setting. The cost is $5 per person. Details: (732) 462-0254.

Freehold AAUW awards

two women scholarships

The Freehold Area Branch of the American Association of University Women recently awarded two scholar­ships for $2,000 each to women from Western Monmouth County who have re­turned to college after age 25. The funds for the scholarships are earned through the association’s annual used book sale, held in June.

Linda Jean Thomas of Freehold is the recipient of the Lew Williams Scholar-ship, named for a past president of the AAUW. Thomas currently works as an office assistant while attending Georgian Court College, Lakewood, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree. She is majoring in his­tory and education and is preparing to teach in middle school.

Laura Giffin of Englishtown received the Leila Sulkes Scholarship, which hon­ors the branch’s current president who was a longtime book sale chairwoman. Giffin works as a nurse and is attending Georgian Court College to earn a master’s degree in holistic health.
