Heart Walk planned for Sept. 20

The American Heart Association’s American Heart Walk will return to Monmouth County on Sept. 20, featuring the statewide New Jersey theme "Step Out, Save Lives!: Exercise Your Heart!

Presented nationally by NutriSoy and Subway, this year’s American Heart Walk will be the 12th annual, according to a press release.

More than 27,000 people from throughout New Jersey, including close to 2,500 walkers and volunteers from throughout Monmouth County, are expected to Step Out, Save Lives! and exercise their hearts at 10 New Jersey American Heart Walk locations this fall.

Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, continue to be the Garden State’s No. 1 killer, claiming more than 28,000 lives annually, according to a press release from the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular disease is also the No. 1 killer of New Jersey women, claiming more than 15,200 female lives each year.

The 2003 New Jersey American Heart Walk theme promotes the importance of being physically active and how physical activity can help reduce or eliminate risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

Lack of physical activity is a risk factor contributing significantly to four of the six leading causes of death in the United States — heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

Join survivors, families, friends, company teams and close to 2,500 walkers from throughout Monmouth County on Sept. 20 at Thompson Park in Lincroft and help fight heart disease and stroke.

The Monmouth County American Heart Walk raised more than $200,000 in 2002.

People from every town and from all walks of life benefit daily, weekly and monthly from American Heart Walk, the flagship walking and fund-raising event that last year helped the American Heart Association invest more than $366 million in research, public and professional education, and community programs.

The American Heart Association recommends exercising for 30 minutes or longer on most days of the week.
