FREEHOLD — Borough officials are embarking on a neighborhood road improvement program and, with a little luck, at least part of the work may be paid for with a grant.
A resolution was introduced at the Borough Council’s June 16 meeting indicating that the council was applying for a Community Block Development Grant, which would be used to resurface several streets in the community.
According to Borough Administrator Joseph Bellina, if the borough is awarded the grant, the funds will be used in Fiscal Year 2004 to resurface Institute Street, Washington Street, Union Avenue and Parker Street.
The application for the $250,000 grant intends to fund the balance needed to complete the neighborhood improvement project, according to the resolution.
The document also states that the borough engineer has determined that "improvements to the roads will improve not only the appearance of the neighborhood, but also the safety of the motoring and pedestrian traffic."
According to Bellina, the council has also determined that the road improvement program should also include tree plantings, Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility sidewalks, and curbing.
In other business, the council introduced a resolution appointing members to the zoning board. The Rev. Andre McGuire, who has served on the board as an alternate member since 2002, will now be a regular member. McGuire will fill the unexpired term of Gene Mulroy through Dec. 31, 2006. Catherine Buchalski, who has served on the board as an alternate member since 2002, was made a regular member. Buchalski will fill the unexpired term of Anne Mackolin through Dec. 31, 2004. John Newman was appointed to fill the zoning board’s alternate member No. 1 post that McGuire previously held.
