FREEHOLD — It doesn’t matter whether you are in possession of an illegal 9 mm semi-automatic or a BB gun, if you’re caught with it in Freehold Borough you will be prosecuted with the same charge — possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.
A 16-year-old borough juvenile male learned this lesson the hard way when he was charged with possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, possession of a weapon without a permit, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats on May 21 shortly before 7 p.m.
The incident which led to the charges took place on Lincoln Place. According to Freehold Borough police Capt. Michael DiAiso, the incident was the result of "words" exchanged on a class trip taken by students at Freehold Borough High School.
Reviewing a police report of the incident, DiAiso said, "Words were passed between two borough youths while on a class trip.
When the subjects began walking home together from school, the argument escalated and feelings erupted and an altercation began."
DiAiso said the 16-year-old boy ran home and returned shortly thereafter in possession of a BB gun and then proceeded to threaten the other subject.
Police were called to the scene and found the young man in possession of the BB gun.
He was taken into custody and sent to the Monmouth County Youth Detention Center, Freehold Township.
