MARLBORO — The new president of the Board of Trustees of the Mount Sinai of Marlboro Cemetery and Mausoleum, Route 79, said work is under way on the long-delayed mausoleum project.
Joseph Spalliero said while final details related to financing the project are being worked out with the New Jersey Cemetery Board, construction is under way.
"I felt it was in the best interests (of the people who have purchased space) to go ahead and build," he told the News Transcript. "I agree with the lot owners that the project should be built."
The News Transcript has previously reported that some people who purchased space in the Jewish mausoleum several years ago have been upset with delays that prevented the building from being constructed.
In a press release, the trustees announced a reorganization of cemetery administration and the naming of Spalliero as director of management. The trustees said they "apologize to their property owners for any inconvenience the delays in construction may have caused them or their families."
Spalliero said two men formerly on the board of directors, Michael Alfieri and John Marrozzi, are no longer affiliated with the cemetery.
The delay in construction of the Jewish mausoleum caused some families who had purchased space there to inter their loved ones in the neighboring Marlboro Memor-ial Cemetery nonsectarian mausoleum, operated by the same board of trustees. When the Jewish mausoleum is completed the families will have to transfer their loved ones to the new building.
The delay in construction has been about four years.
Phyllis Teitelbaum, one of the people who has been waiting for this news, said she was very pleased to learn that Alfieri and Marrozzi are no longer involved with the cemetery and that Joseph Spalliero is in charge. Teitelbaum’s husband has been in the nonsectarian mausoleum and she is waiting for the Jewish mausoleum to open. She said she believes the change among the people who are in control of the operation means the Jewish mausoleum will be built according to the plans she was originally shown.
