FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — A hearing on an application filed by American Cellular Network Co. (Cingular Wireless) to construct a cell tower on Route 9 is now scheduled to resume at the Planning Board’s Oct. 17 meeting.

A hearing scheduled for last week was postponed.

"The township is still negotiating with Cingular Wireless to find another site," said Guy Leighton, the township’s assistant planner.

Cingular Wireless is seeking site plan approval to construct a telecommunications facility which would include a 140-foot-high monopole with an array of 12 antennas, an equipment shelter, an access driveway and related equipment on 4.28 acres on Route 9 north. The shelter and the monopole would be contained within a 22- by 52-foot chain link fence.

At previous meetings, residents of the neighboring Juniper Place development have opposed the construction of a telecommunications facility next to their homes.

At its meeting on Sept. 19, the Planning Board held a public hearing on Shore Point Distributing Co. Inc.’s request for approval to build a 20,800-square-foot addition to the rear of an existing 96,400-square-foot warehouse at the corner of Three Brooks and Halls Mill roads.

About 20 nearby residents expressed concern over the prospect of additional trailer truck traffic.

"The people that live in the area have a lot of problems with the trailer trucks and the noise associated with truck traffic," Leighton said.

Although the distributing company was there before the housing developments, the company has agreed to meet with the township environmental commission on Oct. 14 to see if a solution to the noise can be agreed upon, Leighton explained. The matter is scheduled to return before the board on Oct. 17.

Two other resolutions were approved; Monmouth Meadows, a proposed five-lot subdivision at Elton-Adelphia and Burke roads and the proposed construction of two additions to Sorrento’s Subs restaurant, Route 33.

Monmouth Meadows was seeking an appeal from the Freehold Township Water Resources Protection Ordinance for the construction of four single-family residences and one open space lot.

The owners of Sorrento’s Subs want to add a greenhouse for additional seating and an addition to the kitchen, Leighton explained.
