FREEHOLD – A 36-year-old Hispanic male victim of a robbery took a chance and fought back against his attackers following an incident that occurred on Nov. 25.
According to Freehold Borough police Lt. Mark Wodell, the man, who lives in the borough, was robbed by two unknown Hispanic men at 5:30 p.m. on Jackson Street. Wodell said a cell phone, a gold bracelet and $40 cash were taken from the victim.
The victim and a friend then went looking for the men who had committed the robbery.
Wodell said the men located an individual who was later identified as Johnny Delaera, 20, of Freehold Borough, on Park Avenue. Delaera was with another person at the time.
At some point the man who had been robbed called police to ask for help. The plan was to hold Delaera until officers arrived, according to Wodell.
Upon his arrival at the Park Avenue location, Patrolman Eduardo Santana saw a fight occurring. Wodell said Santana observed four subjects in the fight. The officer attempted to break up the fight and talk to Delaera, but Delaera did not cooperate and began yelling at everyone, according to Wodell.
Santana eventually forced Delaera to the ground and handcuffed him, the lieutenant said.
Delaera was arrested and charged with robbery, conspiracy and resisting arrest with force. According to Wodell, Delaera was placed in the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, in default of $52,500 bail.
Police said the second suspect in the initial Jackson Street robbery fled from that location and his whereabouts are unknown.
