– Learning-disabilities confab set for Oct. 4
Parents, individuals with learning disabilities, professionals, students and community members are invited to the annual Learning Disabilities Association of New Jersey (LDANJ) Conference: Navigate the Maze scheduled for Oct. 4 at the Rutgers University-Livingston Campus Student Center, 84 Joyce Kilmer Ave., Piscataway.
Topics will include executive function, testing accommodations for the SAT, a dyslexia simulation, technology, teaching math to adults and more. A Vendor, School and Post-Secondary Resource Expo will be on site. Advocate and author LeDerick Horne will offer the keynote address, “Beyond Classification.”

– Defensive-driving program scheduled
The East Brunswick Friends of the Library will sponsor a fundraising Defensive-Driving Course 6:30-10 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center. Registration is required. Class size is limited.
Eligible motorists may erase 2 points from their driver’s license and/or get a 5 percent discount on a portion of their auto insurance. Fees range from $55-$65, depending on one’s goals. To receive credit for the course, participants must attend both sessions. Approved by the state of New Jersey, the course will be taught by an experienced police detective/accident investigator. Applications are available at the library circulation desk or by logging on to www.ebpl.org.
Class fees will help pay for children’s and adult programs at the library.

– ‘A Few Good Men’ tryouts on tap in E.B.
Playhouse 22, East Brunswick’s community theater, will hold open auditions for its upcoming production of “A Few Good Men” 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at the theater, East Brunswick Community Arts Center, 721 Cranbury Road. Callbacks are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3.

– Emergency-response class set in Sayreville
A 12-week CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) class is scheduled to begin Sept. 9 at the Sayreville Emergency Squad, Washington Road, Parlin section of the borough. Individuals ages 18 and above are invited to attend.
Topics will include preparing the family for an emergency, first aid, light search and rescue, natural disasters, fire management and more.

– NAMI to host training session for volunteers
NAMI-NJ (The National Alliance on Mental Illness) will hold a support group facilitator training session 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at NAMI NJ, 1562 Route 130 north, North Brunswick. Doors open at 9:30 a.m.
The training is primarily for people who are dealing with their own mental health issues who wish to volunteer to help run NAMI Connection support groups. It will also be suitable for family members who wish to volunteer, and people who are already trained to run NAMI support groups.
The training is free, and travel expenses will be reimbursed. Lunch will be served.
