MONROE – The township is gearing up for its 25th annual fishing derby, an event that has become something of a tradition for local residents.
According to Jay Brown, program supervisor for the Monroe Township Department of Parks and Recreation, the Aug. 11 derby is expected to draw about 200 to 300 participants.
“It’s a day of fun,” Brown said. “People come out with their friends, family, their parents and grandparents, and just set up by the lake at Thompson Park.”
He added that each fish is worth points that go toward a number of prizes provided by the recreation department. Tackle boxes and fishing poles are among the prizes derby participants can win at the end of the day.
But everybody is a winner when it comes to the food. Al Carpitino will be on the grill along with Rick Siemon, serving up hot dogs to derby-goers.
The fishing derby includes several different divisions, separated by age group. Prizes will be awarded in each division and the town will provide refreshments for attendees.
The derby, which is open to all township residents, will be held at the lake in Thompson Park on Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. No fee is required, but attendees must bring their own fishing poles. Hooks, bobbers and worms will be supplied at the event.
“It’s a well received day,” Brown said. “It’s one of the quality-of-life events we run, in addition to all the sports. You don’t have to be a star athlete to come and have a good time.”
