Police say two suspects tried to used stolen credit cards

EAST BRUNSWICK — Police charged two New York men with credit card fraud after they reportedly tried to purchase a game system at GameStop in the Mid-State Mall, Route 18.

Billy R. Merizalde, 27, of Brooklyn, and Geovanny A. Ortega, 30, of Queens, were picked up by police on Feb. 17 after being observed walking from the area of Meineke, which had recently been burglarized, and getting into a car bearing New York license plates.

East Brunswick police Sgt. Jeffrey Marino conducted a motor vehicle stop and found numerous credit cards in the vehicle. Police said the 13 credit cards were embossed with the suspects’ names. The suspects reportedly told Marino that they had attempted to purchase a video game at GameStop. Police said the manager at GameStop then advised Marino that the suspects attempted to purchase a video game system valued at $400. The credit card that they presented was not accepted and they subsequently left the store.

Further investigation revealed that although the credit cards contained the suspects’ names, the information stored inside the magnetic strips belonged to other people, according to police. Both suspects were charged with credit card fraud and taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center and held in lieu of $25,000 bail. Police did not charge the suspects in the burglary of the Meineke shop.
