Three rabid bats have been identified in Middlesex County, two of which tested positive in South Brunswick.
A bat that was found in the area of Blackhorse Lane and Henderson Road in Monmouth Junction tested positive for rabies on Aug. 14, according to the South Brunswick Health Department. Another bat that was found on Beck Court in Kendall Park was also found to be rabid on Aug. 20.
In addition, a bat tested positive for rabies in the vicinity of Route 18 and Milltown Road in East Brunswick on Aug. 18, according to the Middlesex County Office of Health Services. This is the second rabid animal reported in East Brunswick this year; a raccoon tested positive in the area of Whitehall Road and Agate Road on April 8. Residents should report wild animals showing signs of unusual behavior to the local police department.
Additionally, it is recommended that residents avoid contact with wild animals and immediately report any bites from wild or domestic animals to a local health department and consult a physician as soon as possible.
Finally, all family pets should be up to date on their rabies vaccinations and licenses, according to Office of Health Services.
