Local sci-fi association still Trekkin’

The USS Avenger science-fiction fan association celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

Founded in June 1985, the local chapter of Starfleet, The International Star Trek Fan Association Inc., has provided fans interested in science fiction — particularly the long-running “Star Trek” franchise — fantasy, science and space exploration with a social organization through which they can share their interests and build friendships with like-minded individuals.

“If you’d told me in 1985 that we’d still be here and having fun in 2015, I’d have been hopeful yet doubtful,” said Alex Rosenzweig of North Brunswick, one of the chapter’s founding members. “But here we are. … It’s been a great ride, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I’ve made many of my best friends through this club.”

“[We’re] still Trekkin’ after all these years,” former chairperson Carlos Maldonado Jr. of North Brunswick said.

In recent years, events have included writing workshops; trips to area museums; hikes; picnics; group trips to movies and science-fiction conventions; and charitable/community service activities, such as supporting the Regal Cinemas’ Stars of Hope program and a scholarship program run through the Starfleet organization.

The high point of the Avenger’s year-long celebration will be held June 20 at the Omega Diner and Café in North Brunswick.

“It’s a huge milestone. Joining in the celebration and fun will be both current and former members, and friends from five to six other chapters from the NY-NJ-PA area and beyond,” current chairperson Judith Waidlich said.

In addition to this month’s celebration, club members are planning to attend a host of activities ranging from sci-fi conventions and renaissance festivals to special museum exhibits over the next few months.

“When you think about 30 years, on one hand it’s a long period of time, but on the other it sometimes seems so short. But to see something that has maintained itself for 30 years is impressive. Few things stand the test of time,” said Sarah Bolick of Asheville, North Carolina, a “long-distance” member of the group.

The anniversary party will be held 6-10 p.m. at the Omega Diner, 1337 Route 1 South. The event will feature a hot and cold buffet.
