New part-time positions considered

ALLENTOWN — Officials in Allentown are mulling the idea of creating three new part-time positions in an effort to bolster various departments.

The three positions — an assistant to the borough clerk, an assistant to the certified municipal financial officer, and a Class 2 Special Officer for the Allentown Police Department — will be part-time jobs.

The assistant to the borough clerk “would be just to help with the daily functions of the clerk’s office,” Borough Clerk Julie Martin said. “Because we are a small borough, it’s pretty much whatever comes along in the day.”

The Borough Council introduced an ordinance creating the part-time positions on Feb. 5. The council may vote to create the positions at its Feb. 20 meeting.

Mayor Stuart Fierstein said the new positions would be paid for out of the current budget and could yield savings to the borough.

“These positions are being proposed to save money that is currently spent in other ways,” he said.
