Milltown Little League will be having its final registration for the 2002 season on Feb. 13 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. for ages 5-16 at the senior citizens building, Violet Terrace. Alan S. Arons, of East Brunswick, competed in the Seventh Annual Mason-Dixon Open Weightlifting Meet in Frederick, Md., Jan. 19. Arons entered the 105 Kilo Class and took fifth place in the Open Competition. His total qualified him for the upcoming Masters Open and Pan Am Masters Games.
A referee entry-level course for soccer officials will be held Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Old Bridge High School West. The course will run through Feb. 23. It is open to anyone over the age of 12. The Old Bridge Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Rutgers SAFETY Clinic (Sports Awareness For Educating Today’s Youth). To be eligible for the civil immunity protection provided by the Little League Law (A:62A-6), volunteer coaches are required to attend a safety orientation and training skills program. The Rutgers SAFETY Clinic is based on the Minimum Standards for Volunteer Coaches for Safety Orientation and Training Skills Programs, and has been tested in court as having met the standards. The clinic is open for all sports and will be held at the Old Bridge Civic Center on March 10 from 7-10 p.m. In-person registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. The cost will be $30, cash only. Registration will be taken at the door and will be limited to the first 100 people. Participants should bring a pen or pencil and will receive their certification cards and coaches’ book at the end of the clinic. The Monroe boys U12 travel basketball team split two games this past week and lost to Howell, 44-34, in the semi-finals of the Monmouth Youth League playoffs. The team was led by Kyle Horsch and Joe Costa, with nine points each. Colin Horsch chipped in with six, while Mike Buffolino had four and Mark Gulick three. The team ended up in third place overall and played in the final four of the playoffs. Last Thursday they regained first place in the Central Jersey League with a 34-25 win over IHM of Scotch Plains. The team was led by Frankie Carr and Mark Gulick with eight points apiece. Vincent Mahmoud and Kyle Horsch had four, and Mike Buffolino and Greg Moyes added three each. Colin Horsch, Kevin Synarski, Matt Troncone, Joe Costa and Dale Santiago all played well in the victory.
