Presbycusis is hearing loss associated with aging

Do you have difficulty hearing in background noise? Do you have to ask people to repeat themselves? Are you over age 65? If this sounds familiar, you may be one of the millions of Americans who suffer from presbycusis, a hearing loss that is associated with the aging process. Presbycusis is a sensorineural (permanent) hearing disorder, caused by gradual changes over time to the inner ear. This type of hearing loss most often affects the high frequency sounds first, which will make it more difficult for people to hear in the presence of background noise and clearly understand what someone is saying. There is no cure for presbycusis, however there are things that can be done to make your life easier. If you suspect you are having difficulty, you should have your hearing tested to determine your hearing levels. If you are a hearing aid candidate you can discuss your options with your audiologist. Other strategies for successful communication include:

 utilize visual cues when communicating

 reduce background noise if possible

ask people to rephrase their words, rather than repeat
