SAYREVILLE — A man holding a large knife and possessing a gun robbed the Reddy’s convenience store on Route 35 north Feb. 7, according to police reports.
The suspect, described as a black male approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build, entered the store at 7:50 p.m., approached an employee at the cash register and asked for the money inside, police reports said. When the employee could not open the drawer, the man asked the victim to get another employee to help.
The man, who wore a black jacket, black stocking hat and a shirt pulled over his mouth and nose, threatened the second employee by placing the knife at the employee’s neck, according to police reports. The suspect also pulled up his shirt to show a pistol tucked into the waist band of his pants to the victim.
The man then cut the phone line and the line for the cash register, police reports said.
He took the entire cash register and several packs of Newport brand cigarettes and left the store, police said.
The employees saw the man flee the scene on foot, heading south on Route 35 north, police reports said.
Although police searched the area, the suspect was not found. However, they believe that the suspect may have eventually gotten into a silver sport utility vehicle that was observed near the store, according to police reports.
A month earlier, on Jan. 7, another borough convenience store was burglarized by a man wielding a large knife. The suspect took an undetermined amount of money from the cash register at the Bordentown Avenue Quick Chek and fled the scene. There was no indication that the man had a gun in his possession during this incident.
The suspect in the January incident was described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall. He wore a dark-colored jacket, a light-colored hat and a blue bandanna scarf over his face, according to police reports.
Sayreville Detective Mathew Bandurski said Wednesday that police have not determined there to be a connection between these two incidents, which are both under investigation.
