The Amateur Softball Association will conduct the New Jersey Garden State Games’ softball tournaments in August. Tournaments for girls fastpitch softball teams in 18-and-under, 16-and-under, 14-and-under, 12-and-under, and 10-and-under will be held in Warinanco Park, Elizabeth and Roselle on Aug. 5 and 6. There will be a four-game guarantee.

Tournaments for men’s and women’s co-ed slow-pitch softball teams will be held on Aug. 12 and 13 at Warinanco Park. For applications and information, call Leo Spirito at (973) 467-4034.

The Old Bridge Rockets, an under-7 all-star soccer team, completed an undefeated season by taking first place at the Sayreville Summer Classic 2000 soccer tournament. The Rockets are Tori Ash, Alejandro Diaz, Yousef Elhusseini, John Fowler, Kerry Glynn, Christian Grillo, Anthony Jichetti, Christian Kauzljar, Nick Kracsun, Billy Majeski, Bobby Miller, Ryan Moreli, Jonathon Naiwo, Shawn Orzechowski, Nicholas Rojewski, Nicky Spoganetz, Joey Vazza and Rebecca Vazza.

The Old Bridge Hawks, a under-15 boys traveling soccer team, won first place in the Gettysburg Blue-Grey Memorial Day Soccer Tournament in Gettysburg, Pa. The Hawks are Daniel Rispoli, Joseph Goscienski, David Towers, Tyler Lucas, Gregory Epstein, Steven Humiston, Alejandro Batlle, Bobby Karmel, Bryan Fitzgerald, Sean Denehy, Greg Symber, Craig Schumann and Eric Wooldridge.

The 11th Annual Jersey Shore Summer Duals Team/Individual Wrestling Tournament is slated for July 17-20 from 6 to 10 p.m. each day at Matawan Regional High School. The USA Wrestling sanctioned tournament is for youth wrestlers, no year 2000 high school graduates are eligible. The Avalanche Roller Hockey Team won the Goodsports under-14 B Division Winter II Championships at Aberdeen.

The Avalanche defeated the Wizards by a 10-0 score. The Avalanche coasted through the play-offs, with a 12-2 win over the Red Dogs before beating the WIzards.

Zach Cobell of Sayreville was outstanding in goal, coming up with his second shutout of the season. The defense was excellent, led by Joe Fay, Nick Pullizzano and Anthony Coppola. Captain Ronnie Latz of Sayreville also played very well throughout the season.

The high-powered offense, which was the best in the division was led by Herman Daron, Pullizano, Steve Olochwoscz, Andy Voutsinas, Frankie Amadeo, and Steve and Chris Gorombey.

The head coach of the Avalanche is Vinnie Palumbo of Sayreville, with Steve Gorombey and Jeff Smith assisting. The team president is Walter Kamfort of Sayreville.

The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation invites golfers to play in its annual tournament at Olde York County Club in Columbus.

The tournament will take place on Monday, Aug. 7.

The Olde York, a Gary Player signature course, was rated the No. 9 course in New Jersey by Golf Digest.

In addition, Ed and Corrine Eget, the owners, have donated a one-year membership, which will be auctioned off at the event. The membership has a value of approximately $10,000.

The Mets stole the Spotswood Little League Championship last week by defeating the Orioles in a come-from-behind 7-6 win on Monday.

The Orioles jumped on the scoreboard first when Robbie Thuring led the game with a triple and scored on a Brian Speigelhoff single.

The Mets came right back with two runs of their own on a Michael Berner double.

Then it was the Orioles’ turn again, and they tacked on another two runs on a bases-loaded, double by Brian Scott.

But the Mets evened the score at 2-2 when David Bull scored on a fielder’s choice.

Jim DeMarco knocked in another run for the Orioles in the third, but the Mets came back again to score two runs on a hit by Sean McSorley and a bases-loaded walk to Zack Becker.

The Orioles added another two runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk and a double by Scott, and managed to hold the Mets in the bottom of the inning.

But in the bottom of the sixth, the Mets came back one last time.

McSorley led the inning with a single and quickly stole second. With two outs, DeMarco hit a hard ground ball to deep shortstop and managed to leg it out for a base hit. Meanwhile, McSorley raced home to score the tying run. DeMarco wound up on third base.

With two outs and two strikes on the next batter, the ball got by the catcher, and DeMarco raced home to score the winning run, making the final score 7-6.

The Old Bridge Dolphins played in the July Fourth 2000 Pocono Cup finishing in the semifinals.

Along the way they recorded victories against SUSC Kicks, Pa. (3-0), WYSL Select, N.Y. (3-0), and a tie against Intercounty Select, Pa.

They were defeated by L.I. Select, N.Y. (1-0), and by East Brunswick (2-0) in the semifinal.

The Dolphins received outstanding goaltending from Danielle Fitzpatrick, and also featured a stingy defense.
