E.B. Wrestling Club rewards last season’s top grapplers

The East Brunswick Wrestling Club held its sixth annual awards ceremony on Oct. 30 to acknowledge the achievements of the 1999-2000 season and kick off registration for the upcoming season.

The club teaches the fundamentals of scholastic wrestling in a recreational setting, where children in grades two to eight participate in practice, matches and tournaments held throughout the local area.

Experienced coaches and wrestlers volunteer their time to advance the wrestling skills and personal character of the members of the program, according to club officials.

And the EBWC wishes to thank its coaches, John Mooney, Bob Cancro, Mike Wessler, Tony Polito, Jimmy Snook, Mike Capadano and Danny Frezza.

Each of the club’s three teams presented individual wrestlers with statistical awards in key categories as well as special awards selected by the coaching staff.

The award winners of the White Team, comprised of wrestlers in sixth grade and below, were Nicholas Zuigzda (most wins, most team points, outstanding wrestler), Doug Fischer (most takedowns, most escapes, future champ), Brian Murphy and Zach Shelsby (most reversals), Matt Polito (most near falls), Rob Lezark (most pins, coaches’ award), Shelsby (rookie of the year), Jimmy Ryder (most improved) and Kyle Harper (coaches’ award).

The award winners of the Green Team, comprised of sixth-graders and below with more experience, were Mike Corona, T.J. Snook and C.J. Mooney (most wins), Corona (most takedowns, most pins, most team points), Kyle Mascola (most reversals, coaches’ award), Todd Maryott (most escapes), Sergio Garcia (most near falls, outstanding wrestler), Kyle McCulloch and Anthony Woodard (rookies of the year), Snook and Kyle Winant (future champ) and Mooney (coaches’ award).

The award winners from the Senior Team, comprised of wrestlers in grades seven and eight, were Tim Ackerman (most wins, outstanding wrestler), John Parke (most takedowns, most reversals, most improved), Matt Mariani (most escapes), Carmen Corona (most near falls), Paddy Bean (most pins, outstanding wrestler), Kyle Adams (most team points), Joe Santiago and Jason Shelsby (rookies of the year), Jason Gumprecht and Adams (future champ) and Jonathon Horning (coaches’ award).
