Man reports being beaten in car outside restaurant

EAST BRUNSWICK — Police are investigating a report that an attempted armed robbery took place July 1.

A 23-year-old male from South River called police at 12:50 a.m., telling the responding officers that an unknown suspect attempted to rob him and a friend in the parking lot of the Wendy’s restaurant on Route 18 north. The alleged victim said he was in a parked vehicle with a 19- year-old female when they were approached by three suspects, including two black males and one white male.

One of the suspects repeatedly struck the male victim in the face and head with what appeared to be a BB gun, causing several injuries. During the incident, one of the suspects reportedly reached into the vehicle and attempted to take the female’s purse, but was unsuccessful.

The injuries to the victim were not life threatening, police said. The man drove to Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was treated and released prior to calling the police.

The victim told police that he did not recall the suspects, all of whom were wearing hooded sweatshirts, say anything to him or his friend during the incident.

The matter is still under investigation. Police asked that anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident call Detective Kevin Zebro of the East Brunswick Department of Public Safety’s Investigative Division at 732-390-6990.
