EAST BRUNSWICK — Five officers with the township’s police department were recently promoted as two veterans of the squad retired.
Robert Janzekovich, an East Brunswick officer since 1984, was promoted from lieutenant to captain.
Former sergeants William Krause and Alan Quercia were promoted to lieutenant, and officers George Kaltenbach Jr. and Mark Csizmar became sergeants.
The promotions fill vacancies left by the retirements of captains James Sullivan and Kenneth O’Connor. Sullivan, of Old Bridge, was with the department for 28 years, while O’Connor, a resident of Edison, served with East Brunswick for 30 years.
Janzekovich, who lives in Monroe with his wife, Cathleen, and daughters Erin and Colleen, will serve alongside the department’s other two captains — Keith Wilkerson and Scott Mayer, both of whom have been with the department for approximately 25 years.
The captains are the highest-ranking officers working under Director of Public Safety Barry Roberson, who joined the department in the spring.
The newly named captain served in the Patrol Division from 1984 to 1990, when he was transferred to the investigative division. He was promoted to sergeant in 1996 and to lieutenant in 1998. He served as internal affairs officer for four years before being named assistant commander in the administrative division in 2002.
Janzekovich, a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, graduated John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1989 and earned a juris doctor degree in 2001 from the Seton Hall University School of Law.
Krause is a 14-year department veteran who spent 11 years in the patrol division and the last three years in the investigative division. He has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Thomas Edison State College and is working toward a master’s degree in public administration. A firearms instructor, field training officer and hostage negotiator, Krause has earned eight departmental awards for criminal arrests.
Krause lives in Spotswood with his wife, Kathy, and children, Ryan and Matthew. Krause is assigned to the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau.
Quercia has been with the department for 18 years, serving with the Patrol Division from 1987 to 1999, when he became a sergeant. He served as a squad supervisor in the Patrol Division for over three years before moving to the Traffic Division to supervise the DWI Enforcement Team.
With a bachelor’s degree in management from Montclair State University and a master’s degree in supervision and personnel administration from Seton Hall University, Quercia is a drug recognition expert, firearms instructor and physical training instructor. He served for 13 years on the department’s SWAT team as a sniper, and earned 13 departmental commendations for criminal arrests and service.
Quercia and his wife, Sue, live in East Brunswick with their children, Victoria, Nicholas, Timothy and Olivia. He is now assigned to the Patrol Division.
Csizmar, who lives in Spotswood with his wife, Terri, and children, Alexa and Kyle, has now been assigned to the Patrol Division as a squad supervisor.
The 18-year department veteran has worked as a patrolman, DARE instructor and as a detective. He has served as a task force officer with the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Customs Service in Newark. A current member of East Brunswick’s SWAT team, Csizmar has received three meritorious service awards and several letters of commendation.
Kaltenbach, a 21-year department veteran, served in the Patrol Division from 1984 to 2000, when he was transferred to the police training facility as the department’s primary firearms instructor and armorer.
Having studied criminal justice at St. John’s and Seton Hall universities, Kaltenbach has attended in-service schools and has been a member of East Brunswick’s SWAT team for more than 10 years. He has received several departmental letters of commendation.
Kaltenbach lives in Freehold Township with his wife, Louise, and daughters, Caitlin and Meghan.
