HIGHTSTOWN – The borough police department’s traffic
report for May showed a 30 percent increase in accidents and a 120 percent
increase in summons as compared to May 1999.
"There’s no real reason for it, other than that we’re
doing the job," said Borough Council President Bob Patten. "We’re not
trying to do anything extra.
Mr. Patten said that the recent addition of computers in
the patrol cars is helpful to officers.
"We can find out if somebody is wanted," Mr. Patten said.
"We can get that information quickly on the computers."
There were 17 accidents in the borough last month,
compared to 13 from May 1999. The number of injuries rose from one to six,
radar postings increased from eight to 17, and radar summonses rose from 14
to 21.
While 163 people were arrested in May 1999, 360
individuals were arrested last month.
