HIGHTSTOWN – Lawrence M. Kelley, 85, of Hightstown passed away on Tuesday
at his residence.
Born in Conneaut, Ohio, he formerly lived in Pensacola,
Fla., before moving to Hightstown.
Mr. Kelley was a graduate of Williamsport (Pa.) High
School; the Peddie School, Class of 1933; and Yale University, Cum Laude
with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in the Class of 1937. In his senior year at
Yale he was Captain of the football and baseball team and also played
varsity basketball. In 1936 while at Yale, he won the Heisman Trophy. In
1969 he was elected to the National Football Hall of Fame.
At the Peddie School, he was a Teacher, coached football,
and was the Alumni Director until his retirement in 1975. He also had
taught at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Ct. He was a member of the Yale
Alumni Association and the Peddie School Alumni Association. He was an
associate with the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City, NY and a member
of the Heisman Foundation of New York City. He was also a member of the
Peddie Golf Club.
Surviving are his wife, Comdr. Mary Ruth Becker Kelley,
U.S. Navy (Retired); a brother-in-law, Jerome L. Becker, Jr., of
Hightstown; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Emens of Monroe Twp., and Claire
Kutch of Pennington; eighteen nieces and nephews; and twenty-four
great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at
the Peddie School Chapel, South Main St., Hightstown, NJ. Rev. Patrick J.
Castles officiating.
Interment will follow at the Cedar Hill Cemetery,
Hightstown. Arrangements are under the direction of the Glackin/Saul
Funeral Home, 136 Morrision Avenue, Hightstown, NJ 08520.
Relatives and friends called on Thursday evening from
6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Peddie School Chapel.
