Board reviews 40 applicants

The search for a new superintendent of schools is continuing, and school district officials are optimistic that they will have a new schools chief on board by the time school opens in September.
"We are proceeding as expected," said school board President Mary DiMartino, describing the board’s search for a replacement for former Superintendent Claire Sheff Kohn.
The search for a new superintendent resulted in 40 applicants, Mrs. DiMartino said. Now, the school board’s special search committee is reviewing the list of candidates in an effort to draw up a short list of finalists, she said.
Dr. Kohn started work as the superintendent for the Princeton Regional School District earlier this month. She had been superintendent of schools in Lawrence for seven years.
The school board hired consultant Jacqueline Roy to help find a new superintendent, Mrs. DiMartino said. Ms. Roy, who is being paid $19,500, found Dr. Kohn in 1993 after a nationwide search for a new superintendent.
In the meantime, the school board hired Judith A. Ferguson as the interim superintendent. Dr. Ferguson is the former business administrator for the Princeton Regional School District and the Mercer County Department of Education.
Dr. Ferguson assumed her duties July 1. She is being paid $625 per day.
